Level 2
Level 2 Sharks have progressed beyond the basic qualifications for the team, but are still considered to have a beginner to intermediate skill level in competitive swimming. In addition to the requirements for level 1, to qualify for level 2, a candidate must be able to:
- Swim at least 50 yards of both race quality freestyle and backstroke without stopping
- Hold a consistent and appropriate breathing pattern when swimming any distance of freestyle
- Perform rudimentary breaststroke and butterfly
Level 2 practices from 5:50pm-7:10pm Monday through Friday in lanes 4, 5, and 6 at the High School of Science and Technology during the regular season. Pre-practice dynamic stretching and post-practice mobility stretching are built into this practice time. We recommend that swimmers in level 2 attend practice 3-5 times weekly.
Objectives for Level 2 swimmers during practice:
- Continue to develop race-quality freestyle and backstroke
- Extend the distance of their underwaters on starts and turns
- Learn how to complete a racing start from the blocks
- Develop legal flip turns for freestyle and backstroke
- Develop their technique in breaststroke and butterfly so that they are considered race legal
- Build speed and stamina by gradually increasing yardage and decreasing rest times during practice
- Continue to develop swimming etiquette during practices
- Continue to set and achieve personal goals during practices and meets
- Continue to develop from mistakes, failures, and setbacks
