Level 3
Sharks in the Level 3 practice group are proficient competitive swimmers. To qualify for level 3, a candidate must be able to:
- Swim at least 100 yards of legal, race quality freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly without stopping and within a specified time limit
- Perform starts off the blocks
- Perform legal flipturns in freestyle and backstroke
- Complete practice sets as directed by coaches for at least 90 minutes
Level 3 practices from 6:50pm - 8:40pm Monday through Friday in lanes 1, 2, and 3 at the High School of Science and Technology during the regular season. Pre-practice dynamic stretching and post-practice mobility stretching are built into this practice time. We recommend that swimmers in level 3 attend practice 4-5 times weekly.
Objectives for Level 3 swimmers during practice:
- Continue to develop race-quality freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly
- Extend the distance and speed of their underwaters on starts and turns
- Achieve proficiency in racing start from the blocks
- Learn how to complete an appropriate relay transfer
- Achieve proficiency in flip turns for freestyle and backstroke
- Achieve proficiency in open turns for breaststroke and butterfly
- Develop appropriate transitions for individual medley
- Build speed and stamina by gradually increasing yardage, decreasing rest times, and learning how to differentiate appropriate effort levels during practice
- Continue to develop swimming etiquette during practices
- Learn how to develop cohesive and logical plans to set and achieve practice and meet goals
- Continue to develop from mistakes, failures, and setbacks
